Farmsubsidy.org co-founder Nils Mulvad has won the journalism category in the prestigious European Voice 'Europeans of the Year 2006' awards. The nomination cited Nils’s work in "a persistent campaign… to disclose details on who gets what from the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy". The award was presented at a gala dinner in Brussels on 28 November 2006.
European Voice, published by The Economist Group, is the leading European weekly newspaper. This is the sixth year it hosts the prestigious European of the Year awards, which are officially supported by Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt.
On winning the award, Nils said, “This award recognizes ground-breaking cooperation between journalists, researchers and campaigners in more than a dozen European countries. The work of the farmsubsidy.org network has moved the issue of transparency up the political agenda and we have achieved real breakthroughs on behalf of European citizens’ rights to know how – and why – their money is being spent. However, there remains considerable reluctance on the part of EU and national government institutions to disclose information and we will be continuing and expanding our work in 2007.”
